When to Schedule Your Maternity Session: A Guide from a Chesterfield Maternity Photography Perspective

Photo Tips & Tricks

I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t do maternity photos with either of my kids. My husband took some backyard shots, I thought that would be “enough,” and I have regretted it ever since. So when clients ask me about Chesterfield maternity photography timing, I answer with the enthusiasm of someone who learned this lesson the hard way (and only has a blurry iPhone shot of herself and her bump).

The short answer for best timing? 28 to 30 weeks.

Why 28 to 30 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot for Your Maternity Photo Session in Chesterfield

At 28 to 30 weeks, your bump is fully, beautifully there (some might say your bump is BUMPING), but you’re not yet in the stage where bending down to pick something up feels like a full athletic event. Maternity photo sessions aren’t totally stationary. We move, we shift, we try different spots and angles, and it genuinely helps to feel comfortable in your body while we do that. A few weeks later and that comfort level can change quickly (no judgment, growing a human is serious work).

There’s also a really sweet practical reason for this timing: you’ll have your images back before baby arrives. That means you can share them at your shower, send them to family, and have something beautiful waiting for you in those final weeks of pregnancy. There is something really special about sitting with those images–your maternity photography gallery, all yours–before your whole world changes. And it will change, in the very best way.

Should You Book Your Maternity and Newborn Session Together?

If you’re planning a newborn session too, I cannot recommend booking your pregnancy photos in Chesterfield or St Louis with the same photographer enough. A maternity session is a low-stakes, get-to-know-each-other experience. By the time your newborn arrives and your are running on no sleep and pure adrenaline, you already know your photographer, you trust them, and you’ve confirmed you’re a great fit. Many photographers, myself included, offer package discounts when you book both, so it’s always worth asking.

A Note on Timing Exceptions

If you’re expecting multiples, your provider may recommend scheduling closer to 24 to 28 weeks, since twin pregnancies often arrive earlier and your bump will be further along sooner. The March of Dimes week-by-week guide is a great reference for tracking where you are trimester by trimester. It’s always worth a quick conversation with your OB before booking, and then we’ll work backward from there together.
