If you’re a parent of a toddler, you already know: life is unpredictable, messy, hilarious, and full of joy… often all at the same time. And honestly? That’s exactly why photographing toddlers is one of my favorite things.
The key to a smooth, joy-filled session isn’t perfection.
It’s preparation — and a whole lot of flexibility.
Here’s how to set your little one (and yourself!) up for a beautiful, stress-free photo experience.

1. Prioritize Rest: A Good Nap Makes All the Difference
Freshly-rested toddlers = golden.
Try to protect their nap time the day of your session — even shifting a nap a little earlier in the week can help.
A well-rested toddler is far more likely to explore, laugh, snuggle, and give us those sweet expressions you’ll treasure.
2. Snacks Are Not Optional
Think of snacks as your secret weapon.
Bring:
• Bite-sized, non-messy snacks
• A water bottle or spill-proof cup
• Something familiar they already love
Avoid foods that stain (blueberries, chocolate) or leave hands messy right before photos. Think puffs, fruit snacks, mini crackers — toddler gold.
3. Keep Their Routine Steady
The day of your session is not the day to experiment with:
• A skipped nap
• A totally new outfit they’ve never worn
• A brand-new schedule
• Trying a new “no nap!” strategy (I promise, don’t do it!)
Toddlers thrive on predictable rhythms. The more their day feels normal, the more comfortable they’ll be at the session.
4. Bring a Favorite Stuffy (Bonus Points if It Photographs Well)
Comfort objects are magic. They help toddlers feel safe and at ease in a new environment.
A sweet, neutral-toned stuffed animal or little lovey can even look beautiful in photos.
And if it clashes? Don’t worry — we can tuck it away when the toddler is ready.
5. The Most Important Tip: Set the Tone With Your Energy

If you’re feeling fun, present, and flexible… your toddler will follow.
If you’re stressed and trying to force perfect smiles… they’ll feel that too.
Toddlers read their parents’ emotions with incredible sensitivity.
So the best thing you can bring to your session isn’t snacks or toys — it’s joy.
Laugh. Play. Stay relaxed. Treat the session like a little family adventure, not a performance.
I always tell parents:
If you’re happy, we’re all happy.
6. Go With the Flow (Truly!)
Toddlers will:
Run.
Stop.
Dance.
Go limp noodle.
Refuse.
Giggle uncontrollably.
Do the exact opposite of the thing we asked for.
And THAT is where the magic happens.
The best toddler photos aren’t stiff, posed portraits.
They’re the in-between moments — chubby hands reaching for mama, wild giggles while being swung in the air, snuggles on daddy’s shoulder, messy hair, tiny steps, pure joy.
Let them be themselves. I can work with any toddler energy — it’s what I do all the time.
Preparing your toddler is helpful… but letting them be who they are is the real secret.
Come ready to play.
Let go of expectations.
Trust the process.
And know we’re going to create something beautiful — together.
If you ever have questions about prepping your toddler (or what to bring, wear, or expect), I’m always just a message away. 💛
