As a lifestyle family photographer, I’m always advocating for the importance of planning coordinated outfits for your family photo sessions. But even the best-laid plans can sometimes go awry.
Last weekend, my family experienced our very own outfit fail. After carefully selecting outfits that followed my “cardinal rules” (coordinate, don’t match, pattern and texture, complimentary colors), we realized at the last minute that June’s dress was too big and her shoes were way too small. So, she ended up rocking her favorite Chucks and a dress that she was practically swimming in.
To my surprise, the outfit fail didn’t detract from the photos at all. In fact, the images captured the essence of our family even more authentically. The focus wasn’t on our clothes, but on the love and connection we share.
This experience reminded me that while having coordinated outfits can enhance your family photos, it’s not the most important factor. What truly matters is the genuine emotions and interactions between family members. So don’t be afraid to let go of perfection and focus on creating lasting memories.
A huge thank you to Jaclyn Miller for capturing these beautiful moments and letting me play editor!
